AI says the average first frost date for Tallahassee is Nov 15 and the average first freeze is Nov 25. It also says the maturity dates for pumpkins is between 85 and 120 days. I am pretty sure it will be too cold very soon, for pumpkins or any type of squash to survive. I would wait until spring and a soil temperature of at least 65 degree F to plant squash seeds.

I'm in the same growing zone as Tallahassee and have found I can get a really good pumpkin crop by starting the seeds indoors in late July and transplanting in early August.

A lot of folks will tell you that you can't grow pumpkins in zone 9...but they are wrong!

p.s. pumpkins started in spring never survive the summer here but that declining sun angle in August fits them perfectly.

Out of total curiousity I asked my AI and it said basically the same as Chuck. It's not impossible, but they probably won't get any decent size and get ripe. So I asked Gemini AI and it also said no. So I asked Grok AI.. is also says no.

I'm Canadian so I've no idea.. but when chatgpt5 Gemini and Grok all agree on something.. my money is on them lol.

Interesting but this is one area where AI is wrong relative to zone 9.

AI says start seeds in spring after last frost for zone 9...not gonna happen. They will not survive zone 9 heat and humidity at least as manifested in Texas. Don't fall for that...or face disappointment.

The trick is to start them late summer when the sun angle starts in decline and then they thrive. You have well over 100 days to reach maturity before frost...but not now obviously.

AI said "9a".. I don't know if the A makes a difference but I really hope the OP gives it a bunt! If they do.. we need to place some bets (not money just bets). and the pics can decide if you need to bow down to AI or if AI needs to bow down to you lol!
