Bugs for fighting bugs

I have seen bugs in garden catalogs such as ladybugs. We get aphids in the garden and we have the occasional ladybug. I am wondering if anyone has tried to buy ladybugs to treat other bugs as an alternative to chemical warfare. I am wondering how well they do the job and what sort of area they would cover. I am hoping they would survive the season and be more abundant the next year, but am I being too hopeful?

I think it depends on where you are and whether they are able to sustain themselves. I have personally tried introducing bugs to fight other bugs, but I have found that because it gets fairly cold (and this year was a bad year altogether) they did not survive the seasons. However, it is a good and ecological way to keep your garden safe.
