Boxwood?

Hi all,

I know absolutely nothing about plants. However, we just bought our home and we have these shrubs in the front by our front door. We’ve noticed in this area there is a strong smell that resembles cat urine. We first thought there may be a stray cat in the neighborhood that is using our shrubs, but I’ve never seen any cats around. After doing some research, I found that boxwood shrubs can give off an odor. Do these shrubs look like a boxwood? And if so, is there anything that can be done to mask the smell? Thanks in advance!

Yep, that's boxwood and some varieties do smell bad. The reason that they smell bad is because of the oils in the plants tissues are heated by the sun. There is nothing to do about this except remove the plants or get a bunch of indoor cats and get used to the smell.
