Birds of paradise help

I purchased a birds of paradise in early may, but the plant looks like it's struggling .could some look at the picture and give me your thoughts. Thank you.

Your bird of paradise looks stressed put it in the shade and stand it in a bucket of water for a couple of days, see what happens..

They like to be root bound and fed every few weeks

Yes, DrCase is quite right. The pot is too big. They are like agapanthus, like to be packed inside a pot. I usually enrich the soil with horse manure after flowering. They can take a lot of abuse. Don't worry too much. Make sure they are indoors when it snows or is cold though!
