Hey everyone,

This year, I've noticed a huge number of tiny gray jumping insects in my backyard. Attached video didn't work so here the link. They're especially noticeable all over the driveway, and anytime I disturb the dirt — it’s like thousands of them suddenly start hopping around.

What’s odd is that I’m not watering my backyard right now. I’m actually planning to let everything dry out so I can eventually re-sod it. So it's surprising to see so much insect activity when there's not much moisture present.

I need help with two things:
  1. Identification: What could these tiny gray jumping bugs be? Are they springtails or something else?
  2. Control: How can I safely get rid of them? I have small kids who play in the backyard and sometimes splash around with water. So I’m trying to avoid harsh chemicals — even those labeled "safe" — especially if they could become active again with water exposure.
Any advice, natural remedies, or safer treatment options would be really appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I couldn't get a good look at the insect on that little video. Could you take a close up picture of one of them?

Looks like an immature Springtail. They are an insect that can be and in most cases are beneficial.
