Any ideas what this is

Hi All

Had two of these grow in a small patch in the backyard. They grew to about 1.5 metres before being removed as they started to die off

Since then we have had a few shoot up around that area.

Any idea what they are?

I`m wondering if it might be Iresine herbstii ? I reckon it might grow in Oz - it does in Malaysia and other nice warm places

Possibly Amaranthus cruentus- red amaranth. It's not native to Australia but can be grown there.

Yes, another one of the Amaranthe family, there are about 60 different varieties of bloodroot Iresine is one of them. I understand this has been banned as a food colouring now in the USA. E123
