Hi, I've had this acer in my garden since I moved in 30 years ago. It's not changed shape significantly in that time and we've done nothing to train or shape it. It's around 7ft tall. I'd like to try to propagate it, and was thinking of air layering but have read some weeping acers can't be air layered? Any advice on how best to propagate it, and if possible what type it is would be greatly appreciated.

Acers are easy to propagate. You can take a cutting in the spring, dip it in rooting hormone, and stick it in a good potting mix or the ground. It's important to take the cutting when the plant is actively growing new growth in Spring or early Summer. Wait until you see new growth and then take your cutting.

My guess is that t is Acer palmatum ‘Crimson Queen’. One thing to consider when growing them from cuttings or layerings is that being a weeping variety it will need staking to grow in something like a tree shape. Without staking it will grow horizontally as a ground cover.
