Cheers Upsy :):)

About an hour and a half for me, so not too bad. Our family lived in the area in Victorian times, found the grave of one of them, same name as my Dad and he worked on Churches like I do :eek:

Great pictures. I have often wondered how they built those magnificent buildings with such primitive tools and no heavy machinery at all. I used to build houses. If one that I built lasted 50 years it would be a miracle and those buildings look perfect after centuries.

What beautiful buildings!! :love: I love the church in the first post, picture # 5.

I have a question about the inscription in the last picture in the second post. Can you tell me why some of the letters are larger than others? ... "PRAISE HIM O YEE CHILDREN" ... I've seen that done before, and always wondered what makes certain letters more special than others. :confused:

Blimey Mary, you just helped me crack the code

The capital letters are all Roman numerals :eek:

They don't make sense when you write them as they are...

IIMCILD

But if you add them up...

M = 1000
D = 500
L = 50
C = 100
I = 1

It adds up to 1653, The year the tower collapsed

When was that put there and why did they see fit to put the date of 1653 on the same thing twice?

Really enjoyed and pics and info @zigs it looks like you had some beautiful weather. I wonder how long after the tower collapsed the commemoration was chiseled and placed? It looks new, with the exception of the language. Also fun to find a long lost relative who worked the same trade.:) I guess he would have traveled some for work during Victorian times. If he was in a guild, you can probably find out some information about him.

Presumably after they'd rebuilt the tower :)

No idea why, maybe a hidden prayer to glod?

Was a lovely weekend :) Always good to see me Daught :)

Style is 17th Century, before folk could spell :D

Got contacted by someone on a scientific forum where I was using my real name, he lives in New Zealand and has the same surname as me, we're both decended from the relative in the grave, only his family emigrated while my side moved up to London.

He even has details of the boat they went out there on.

We swapped pics, we look like each other
