Those fruits are also called Mexican Gerkins. They are ripe when they fall off of the plant and they taste like sour/dill pickles.

When you pull them off they taste like cucumbers. When they fall off they taste like pickles. It doesn't really matter. It depends on what you like.

I better restate what I said. When you pick them while young they are sweet like cucumbers. When you let them mature they taste as if pickled.
