Garlic scape are forming. At the end of the snake like tentacle the bulbil, seed pod, forms. The scape is often cut and used like the cloves. I don’t use the scape and have found if left on to mature the cloves get slightly larger at harvest. The bulb splits, but seems to have no bearing on the storage time. Scapes are a characteristic of hard neck garlic. Harvest in usually in July, but I leave until about the end of August.

My garlic is almost fully cured and ready to use.
Over-wintered garlic is supposed to be marginal where I live, but I get a good crop each year.
I think it's a raised bed that makes the difference; they warm up quicker in Spring.
