About 150 Spanish Onions were planted in an area of 4 feet by 8 feet. The sets were planted at 5 inch centers. The soil was firmed around the bulbs using a hand press. When the plants get established the are will be mulched with wood chips.

With onion sets, it's a case of, the smaller, the better.
You see, onion sets are produced by growing seed onions so close together that they stay tiny, far too small to throw out flowers.
As such, smaller sets have no bearing on the genetic potential of the plants, but they ARE further from going to seed, the major danger with sets.
I take it your onions are "day-long", with you being in Canada, Durgan?
I've put mine in this week, 300 plants and sets.

I just buy the sets and they always turn out into fist size or plus onions. I also plant the small green seedlings when they come into season in the supply houses. Both get to be the same size.

I grow Walla Walla if I can find hem, since they make great slicing not hot onions.

Onions make great juice, lightly fried in butter, and baked. And they keep well.
