    Type of Apple

That’s frustrating! This is what I had read, and that crab apples can be yellow. We only moved into the house in the Spring so finding out what we have in the garden over the next year as it comes out

    Type of Apple

Thanks. I was just wondering if they were crab apple of likely to be more edible varieties but will wait and see how they grow. Yes I’ll do that. Thanks

    Type of Apple

We have 3 apple trees in our garden. Is there anyway of telling what type of apples they are or is it just a matter of waiting till the fruit either grows, or doesn’t?

    Cutting lilac back to ground

That’s helpful Esther. So you would take out all the small shoots and leave the main trunk about fence height? I think I’ll do that and then look at it again end of winter next year. It’s such a beautiful tree.

    Cutting lilac back to ground

Thanks for all your comments. We have a lot of overgrown trees and shrubs in the garden. We only moved in, in April. The lilac has had some lovely flowers but it is definitely in need of a trim. Here’s a picture not sure where I’m going to put all the trimmings even if we just do a small cut...

    Cutting lilac back to ground

We have a really overgrown lilac tree in the garden. We’ve just moved into the house and it looks like it has just been left for a number of years. Lots of branches and flowers only on the tops. I’ve been reading up about cutting this right back to the ground which I think it needs but that this...

Apple tree - pruning and support

Sounds lovely Bill and thanks again. Happy memories. My Nanna had one in her garden and it’s lovely to have apple pie from them. Yes tackling the ground elder bit by bit, taking the roots out and then covering it to try and stop it. Don’t think we will get rid of it all!

Apple tree - pruning and support

Thanks Bill. That’s really helpful. So do you think prune the top back to the top of the fence? Also if I put weed killer on the ground elder below, could this affect the tree roots?

Apple tree - pruning and support

Looking for some advice on what to do with this Apple tree. We moved onto the house recently and it’s well established but a bit out of control, getting close to the house and the base is surrounded by ground elder. Any advice on what you would do with it? Ideally we would like to keep it and...

    Prune or leave?

We have moved into a house with a really lovely established garden. The house has been rented for about 6 years and the garden has been left to grow I think, which isn’t such a bad thing but some of the trees could do with a cut back and currently in the process of digging out some well Spread...

    Tree/shrub identification

We have just moved and have lots of beautiful trees and shrubs in the garden. The garden hasn’t been maintained for a good few years so a lot of them are quite high. We’re going to try and see what comes out over the next year but some of the trees and shrubs are pretty much sticks with flowers...
