It is the time of year time to prepare a suitable garlic bed for the 2015/2016 crop, planting around the end of October. This is for Zone 6 and below. A small suitable mulched area of 8 feet by 8 feet will be sufficient for around 100 plants at 6 inch center spacing.

We plant garlic in our backyard but only for novelty and not really for farming. But our neighbor did plant some hundreds and when harvested, I was able to witness how it was done. Since the garlic plant is not that attractive unlike the ginger so I did not notice its growth. The neighbor gave us about half a kilo of that garlic harvest for drying. We were instructed to hang the garlice by the stem.

I need to start cleaning up my garden area and get it ready! Thank you for the information. I may try to plant some garlic for next year.

I like growing garlic in pots, because here in the UK we don't always get the cold that garlic needs to clove. (Vernalisation)
Pots allow the cold to get to the garlic.
