Don't prune very often, but they are only young plants at present. I shall trim them each year, hopefully they won't get too large.

Not sure what you could grow in your area. What about Azaleas and/or Fushias. They look great in large pots and flower well.
Climbing roses may be an option as you can cut them back quite easily, they are generally not fast growers.
I have a JD, have to stop the blades before reversing. Doesn't bother me too much as I don't have to do it often and I can't turn around to see...

I have had no luck with Fuchsia cuttings, will try to strike them in kitty litter and see how they go. Thanks for the tip.
